Time to break down some barriers!  We have a very exciting installment of the VC News for you today, so let’s have no delays.

POLLS: Are you attentive enough that you’ve noticed the various polls that we run on our website?  I hope you are. You should go check them out and make votes on them.  It’s a great way to get your voice heard and to gauge what your fellow Veloci-fans are thinking about!

EMPLOYEE NEWS:  There are some shake-ups afoot here at Velocity Comics, so get ready!  First off, the bad news.  After 65 billion years of sterling service, Russell Paulette will no longer be manning the desk on Wednesday’s.  RS has been as much a Wednesday fixture over the years as late shipping and damages, and it’s hard to imagine how we’ll survive without him.  RS is beginning student teaching this semester, and we all wish him the best of luck as he wanders off into the sunset, tipping his hat at the tumble weeds as he goes.

ALSO-The good news!  IAN SAMPSON has finally popped the question, asking longtime paramour MANDY DUNN to do him the honor of getting hitched (to him).  Early reports indicate that she said yes.  These two join the gigantic RAWN GANDY and his diminutive lover, Meagan Olson, in their march down the isle.  Could love be more then just a lie that losers tell?  Stayed tuned as these star-crossed couples make their ways through the uncertain future and maybe we’ll all find out, once and for all!

Hello, all–

Man, where’d the help go? Tom Batten is nowhere to be seen this weekend, so I’m on newsletter duty again. I guess I can’t go see THE WATERHORSE again, which is a shame because I’m very close to cracking some of the tertiary themes. I hope it’s worth it, Batten.

Hey, who here likes comics? Show of hands? Hmm. I would’ve thought it’d be more of you. Anyway, for those that do, I’d recommend going to http://www.dashshaw.com/ . Dash Shaw, Richmond’s own maverick comics innovator, has started a webcomic called BODYWORLD, and it’s garnering widespread attention out of the gate. Get in on this one early so you can confirm how much cooler you are than all the hepcats at the soda shoppe. And it’ll whet your appetite for this summer’s THE BOTTOMLESS BELLY BUTTON, Dash’s 700 page epic GN coming from Fantagraphics.

RUMOR OF THE WEEK: Looks like there’s a cameo at the end of the upcoming HULK movie. Sam Jackson as Nick Fury? Old news, people. I’m talking about Robert Downey, Jr. as Tony Stark, paving the way for an AVENGERS movie after THOR and ANT MAN come out over the next few years. Discuss.

*BLACK HOLE SC $17.95 Pantheon finally releases in softcover Charles Burns’ seminal horror masterpiece about promiscuous teens in the 70’s mutating into monsters. It’s one of my top 3 comics of all time. Highly recommended.

*YOUNGBLOOD #1 $2.99 I know I’m stretching the limits of my credibility with this one, but hear me out. Joe Casey is responsible for many of the most under-rated comics of the last decade (Wildcats, G0dland, Automatic Kafka to name a few), so when he’s attached to any project I sit up and take notice. And hey, anything that gets me out of that posture-wrecking slouch I’m so fond of is worth a mention.

*BPRD 1946 #1 $2.99 Ever wondered how the Bureau in Hellboy came to be? Wonder no more, Effendi. Mike Mignola writes and up-and-comer Jason Alexander illustrates the nazi-beatin’ origins of the BPRD. I hear Chris Martin from Coldplay makes a cameo (I actually didn’t hear that.)

*EVIL DEAD #1 (OF 4) $2.99 I don’t know if this is a re-imagining, a sequel or an adaptation of Sam Raimi’s classic film, but John Bolton is drawing it and it looks cool.

*HULK #1 $2.99 Hulk looks very, very, very embarrassed in this one.

GREETINGS VELOCI-MITES! I have returned from my funky adventures through space and time a new man, ready to take the art of Comic Shop Newsletter writing to the next level! ULTIMATE HUMAN #1- Based on the title of this book I first assumed it was about my Grandma, but as it turns out, what happened was, Super-hero writer extraordinaire WARREN ELLIS and drawer of muscles CARY NORD posed the question, ‘what would happen if IRON MAN fought THE HULK?’ to Marvel and Marvel was like, ‘go for it bro.’

Hello, all…

Tom Batten flaked on me, so I am left to come up with the newsletter this week in his wake. NO SLEEP ‘TILL:  Heap big congratulations to one TIM SINCLAIR, winner of our DRAW! BRING ON THE BAD GUYS contest.  Tim will be the proud recipient of a small box of Food Club brand plastic knives and forks, a poem I wrote about my cat when I was in the third grade, and several other great prizes.  Food Brand, shatter resistant since 1945.  These ain’t yo mama’s knives and forks!

Hi, subscribers–

Lately at Velocity Comics we have seen an unprecedented number of defaults on subscription boxes. I’ve never had so many people in such a short amount of time just up and disappear. You might not think that one customer affects our bottom line, but let me assure you–you do. I won’t bore you with the minutiae of comics retailing, but every comic I order to put in boxes (based only on customer request) is money spent that I don’t get back if you default. I order enough copies to fill the racks, and the extra books I have to put back because of defaulted boxes will very likely never sell. Wasted money. And while you may think the comics retailer life is one of glamour and piles of money, that’s a facade. If you like coming to Velocity Comics as much as we like having you, please help us stay healthy by coming in and buying the books you’ve asked us to hold for you. You are literally helping us stay open. Thanks!

CARTOONISTS OF TOMORROW,PUT YR MONEY WHERE YR MOUTH IS-Makeout Creek is currently taking submissions of comic and sequential art of all genres and styles. We are looking for work that challenges boundaries and finds new ways to tell stories, and not so much work that sticks to the formula of its chosen genre (be it super-hero, psychological, humor, or anything else). We’d like to make comics an important part of the magazine, as their inclusion helps to fulfill Makeout Creek’s central goal of busting genres and changing the way literary journals work. As we work to lay out the magazine, we are also actively seeking motif-style drawings and characters that can be used to accentuate the fiction and poetry included. Our first paper-bound issue will debut at the AWP Conference in New York in late January, so artists should act fast, and email submit@makeoutcreek.com for submissions or puzzlinevidence@gmail.com for questions.
